Are you a “newsjacker”?

Newsjacking , according to David Meerman Scott, is a “process by which you inject your ideas or angles into breaking news, in real time, in order to generate media coverage for yourself or your business.” It’s a great way to join the conversation and get your topic out there. Riding the coattails of whatever story is hot news can increase your exposure and get you places you may not have gotten on your own.

Pay attention to what’s going on in the world. If you sell American made products, you should be tuned into ABC news who reports on this all the time. If you sell baby toys or clothing, are you following Will and Kate? The royal heir is a great way to capitalize on popular news. You get the picture. Utilize Google Alerts for keywords so you know when something new is popping up on the internet about your niche. Check out what is trending on Twitter. If popular magazines in your niche market are talking about something, you probably should be too. Just remember to put your spin on it. Establish your opinion.
